Luke 9:27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
What is the kingdom of God? That is a hotly debated question in the religious world. This kingdom was prophisied repeatedly in the Old Testament like Daniel 2, The two most common answers are:
1. The Kingdom is a futuristic earthly kingdom in which Jesus will once again rule from the throne of David.
2. The Kingdom is the Church which Jesus rules over presently.
I fall into the camp of option two...primarily because of our passage today. Jesus said that there were people standing in the crowd, listening to him that would be alive when the kingdom came into existence. That brings only one of two conclusions:
1. If the kingdom is still yet in our future, there are people walking the earth today that are well over 2,000 years old.
2. The kingdom that Jesus is speaking of was established within the lifetime of those present and continues to be in existence today!
Acts 1:4-8 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. (5) For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. (6) When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? (7) And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. (8) But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
In verse 6, the disciples asked about when he would establish his kingdom. His answer was to go to Jerusalem and do not leave until the promise was fulfilled. In chapter 2 of the Book of Acts we find where this promise was fulfilled.
